STATEMENT
I am currently making small mixed media sculptures of elves, fairies, cats, birds, among other things. Calling these artworks “FOMI – Figments of My Imagination” struck me as very on point for my slightly eccentric sculptures, as each draws solely from my own creative invention.
Working in many mediums – fiber arts, printmaking, painting, collage, altered books, and journals, I have gained a great appreciation for experimentation. All these practices come together in my work today. Each figure is completely unique in its sculpted expression, body shape and size, and the color palette used.
I am additionally working on a collage series on wood panels of whimsical houses and landscapes in a folk-art style.
All my art is inspired by the human need for play and seeks to bring joy and a sense of wonder to the viewer. My mixed media art brings together paper clay, paint, fabric, collage materials, and multiple skills.
BIOGRAPHY
Colleen A. Miller is a mixed media artist and sculptor, printmaker and book artist. Her work focuses on using the colors, textures, and patterns of the natural and human-created world.
The common threads in her art are bold colors, high contrast, free lines, textures, and layered images.
She has studied art with local and nationally known artists for the last decade. Born in Cape May, NJ, she is a life-long New Jersey resident and currently resides in Lawrenceville. Her studio is in Lambertville, NJ.
Colleen graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in communications, with a concentration in photography. She also studied media management at the University of Missouri Graduate School of Journalism and worked in print and online for more than three decades.
STATEMENT
I am currently making whimsical, small mixed media sculptures of figures such as elves, fairies, cats and birds. Calling these artworks – FOMI – Figments of My Imagination, struck me as very on-point for my slightly eccentric sculptures, as each draws solely from my own creative invention. Each figure is completely unique in its sculpted expression, body shape and size, and the color palette used.
My work seeks to bring joy and a sense of wonder to the viewer. All my art is inspired by the human need for playful moments and whimsy.
My mixed media art brings together paper clay, paint, fabric, collage materials, and multiple skills. I find unrestricted experimentation leads to satistying works.The common threads in my art whether painting, collage or other mediums are bold colors, high contrast, texture, and layers.
In painting and collage, I make abstract and “folk art” style pieces with themes of nature – plants and trees as well as animals . Bringing together color, texture and repetition, I create pattern and shape and build an image that is pleasing and engaging.
I love to experiment and have worked in many mediums – fiber arts, printmaking, painting, collage, altered books and journals. All these practices come together in my work today.
BIOGRAPHY
Colleen works from her Lambertville, NJ studio. Since finding her way to art practice in 2011, she has studied with many teachers, and attended art retreats and conferences.
Being a journalist for many years, she started making altered books. This practice included many mixed techniques and led to her current work in mixed media. In the last decade, Colleen has participated in many open studios and art tours as well as shows and exhibitions. Currently, she has artworks in the Amano Gallery and the retail store Dandelion Wishes.
Colleen volunteers for HomeFront’s Artspace, which brings creativity and art to those trying to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. She believes deeply in the power of art to heal and build self confidence.
A true “Jersey Girl,” Colleen grew up in South Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University with a communications degree. Later, she studied media management at the University of Missouri Graduate School of Journalism. Colleen spent more than three decades working in journalism, public relations, and web and social media strategy. She currently resides in Lawrence with her husband and two shelter cats.
