“In the paradox of sculpting human forms lies a dynamic tension. While they may appear motionless, frozen in time, they pulse with life, each capturing an unfinished narrative or conversation. My sculptures invite observers to engage their imagination with the unfolding stories embedded within. Every piece is a dance, unique to the individual casting their gaze.
For me, art is a catalyst for expansion, growth, and a profound realization of our interconnectedness with all things. Nothing is static; everything is in perpetual motion, expressing itself from its innermost core. I sculpt to communicate, to share, to expand, and to feel connected to the rhythmic flow of nature. My creations emerge from a place of joy and a connection to the vast sea of endless potential, where judgment and fear are relics of the past, replaced by true freedom.
Don’s current passion is the creation of a series of sculptures he calls “The Dance of Consciousness,” where he delves into abstract expressions of consciousness inspired by the movement, art and language of dance.”
BIOGRAPHY
Don Campbell is a narrative sculptor specializing in portrait and figurative art, predominantly working with water-based clay. Describing himself as a “storyteller in clay,” he draws inspiration from influences such as Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, a key figure in the Baroque period, and Otto Scharmer, the co-creator of the Theory U process for fostering creativity through deep listening and presencing.
Don’s journey into sculpting began in high school, where he crafted two distinctive pieces—a plaster abstract tree and a metal and plexiglass abstract form. Although his passion and talent for sculpting were evident, he initially pursued a career in graphic design, fearing the stereotypical struggles of a starving artist. Over two decades passed before he circled back to sculpting.
During his graphic design career in Toronto, Don worked for various companies and later moved to the U.S., assuming an art director role and freelancing for advertising agencies. He eventually founded his own agency, DJ Campbell Advertising & Marketing, which has thrived for over 35 years.
Don is the author of ‘Creativity, It’s not what you think,’ in which he explores his path of creative expression through his artwork. The book chronicles his passion for sculpting.
