STATEMENT
I am interested in how simple rules can produce unexpected visual experiences. Each piece begins with a geometric framework that establishes a logic for the composition. Within that structure, I explore color, rhythm, and repetition, allowing small variations to create movement, depth, and optical shifts.
Although I work across drawing, painting, and sculptural surfaces, my approach remains consistent. I enjoy moving between hard-edge color fields and more intricate constructions built from countless individual marks.
I think of every composition as a balance between planning and discovery. The underlying system provides direction, but the work develops through a series of decisions that respond to what is happening on the surface. This process allows complexity to emerge from relatively simple elements.
BIOGRAPHY
I am a Colombian-born visual artist based in Pennington, New Jersey. Before focusing my practice on contemporary art, I worked for two decades as an architect, educator, and urban designer. I studied architecture at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá and later earned a Master in Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design as a Fulbright Scholar.
My work has been exhibited in juried exhibitions and outdoor art festivals throughout the Northeast. I have participated in shows including the Mark Arts Abstract National Exhibition, the Arts Council of Princeton Annual Member Show, and festivals such as the Frederick Festival of the Arts, the Stamford Art Festival, and the Montauk Art Show on the Green.

STATEMENT
My abstract drawings explore geometric relationships brought about by grids, diagonal lines, curves, and, color. All drawings are handmade, each following a set of rules determining its resulting patterns. The legacies of Op Art, Minimalism, and other related movements are a constant inspiration as is my love of Midcentury architecture and design.
I lay out drawings manually using technical drafting tools and paper. The hatching is done most often in acrylic or India ink. I also use gouache, acrylic markers, watercolors, ink pens, graphite, and colored pencils. I recently
started working on larger acrylic paintings using hard-edge techniques.
BIOGRAPHY
I am Felipe Bermúdez Durana, a Colombian architect, urban designer, and artist based in Pennington NJ. Since 2005, I have led multidisciplinary teams on projects ranging from urban design to interiors. Rooted in modernism, my work emphasizes tectonics, functionality, and craft.
Art was my first passion and the reason I became an architect. In 2005, I worked in Doris Salcedo’s studio on a large-scale installation in Torino, Italy—an experience that opened the door to the world of contemporary art.
In 2010, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Urban Design at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. After returning to Colombia, I gained commissions through public and private competitions and taught architecture in studios at the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano and Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá.
In 2016, I began making geometric drawings alongside my design work. After moving to the U.S. in 2020, I transitioned to working full-time as an artist in 2023. My work continues to evolve, informed by years of architectural practice and a deep interest in form, structure, and visual order.
