Coming from a background of realism, playing with POP ART & Abstract Expressionism in the 60’s. I became interested in trying to combine all styles in my own way, Abstract Realism came about.
Having an inquisitive mind and being a voracious reader, visual word play and symbolism evolved in my work. In trying to initiate a dialogue with the viewer the marks of the creative process became as important as the image. Seducing the viewer with a visual pleasing and engaging surface.The juxtaposition of objects, movement and marks to involve ones subconscious in an inner dialogue. Consciously leaving an open ended image to allow the viewers history to add to the impact of the image.
BIOGRAPHY
James Dashcund is a visual artist based in Hopewell, New Jersey. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa and has since been involved in creating a personal lexicon. James’s work is known for its innovative combination of materials, techniques, paints, marks, and digital media. He is driven by a philosophy that art should challenge the viewer’s perceptions and evoke a range of emotions. He aims to create pieces that not only draw attention but also encourage deeper reflection. His work serves as a medium for dialogue about social, political norms, and personal experiences. It leaves an open-ended image waiting for the viewer to inject their own personal experiences to find a question.
His artistic practice is characterized by a bold and experimental approach to visual arts. His work integrates elements of abstract expressionism, realism, with modern digital techniques, creating a unique visual language that is both engaging and thought-provoking. His pieces often feature layered textures and patterns that explore themes of identity, culture, and human emotion.

STATEMENT
Coming from a background of Realism, playing with POP Art & Abstract Expressionism in the Late 60’s, I became interested in trying to combine all styles in my own way, Abstract Realism came about with an interest in Social Political Art.
Having an inquisitive mind and being a voracious reader, visual word play and symbolism evolved in my work. It was from a trip to Paris where I had started to take (admittedly bad) photos of graffiti covered posters. I became interested in my response to images, a language I did not know (well) and the graffiti. It became a visual game. What were they trying to say? It was at this point I started injecting images with a lot of collage elements. Images becoming layers of response and reaction. A story unfolding.
In trying to initiate a dialogue with the viewer the marks of the creative process became as important as the image, seducing the viewer with a visually pleasing and engaging surface. The juxtaposition of objects, movement and marks involves one’s subconscious in an inner dialogue. Consciously leaving an open ended image allows the viewer’s history to add to the impact of the image and hopefully evokes an ever changing response.
Unlocking the Chaos that surrounds me has consumed me in different ways though the years. I have realized all that I am is an image maker.
