STATEMENT
Most of my work explores the natural landscape—both real and remembered—of the many places dear to me. I aim to transcend my interpretation of subject while exploring aspects of perspective, light, composition and expectation. I paint using an additive and subtractive technique, resulting in a push-pull study of both the subject matter of the landscape and the painting medium itself. My paintings are typically not premeditated or planned, but rather are a result of a spontaneous process during which individual additions or erasures dictate the next step. For me, painting is not just an interpretation of what I can see and feel, but also a communication of something that can be collectively experienced.
BIOGRAPHY
Originally from Cape Cod, Sasha currently lives in Hopewell, New Jersey with her family. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College and spent a year as a graduate fellow in Printmaking at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she taught undergraduate printmaking. Following her concurrent interest in public health, she moved to Boston, where she worked as a public health researcher for the next decade, ultimately obtaining a Masters of Science in Epidemiology. After several years in London, she returned to the art world and started painting full time. Sasha has shown her work in juried exhibitions in the Northeast, including shows hosted by the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association Museum, and the Phillips Mill Art Association, among others. Her large scale semi-abstract landscapes are explorations of memory, place and time, often playing upon the paradoxes in nature, such as the simultaneous presence of stillness and movement, chaos and order, light and darkness.
STATEMENT
Most of my work explores the natural landscape—both real and remembered—of the many places dear to me, such as Cape Cod and Maine. I am also interested in portraiture, inspired by my daughters and themes of navigating girlhood and womanhood. For me, painting is not just an interpretation of what I can see and feel, but also a communication of something that is collectively remembered, understood and inherited. Growing up on the Cape has given me an infinite well of memories and moments, from which I can draw when I am painting. I work in several mediums, including oil, acrylic, and watercolor. I have also used my undergraduate training in printmaking in various combinations with painting and photography. I have lived in Massachusetts, Peru, the United Kingdom, and New Jersey. Every one of these places has made a lasting impact on my work.
BIOGRAPHY
Sasha grew up in Brewster, Massachusetts and studied printmaking as an undergraduate at Smith College. After graduation, she spent a year at UMass Amherst as a graduate fellow studying printmaking and photography, before going on to pursue a Masters in Science in Epidemiology in Boston. Sasha spent a decade in public health, working in Boston, Peru and London doing clinical research. After her daughters were born, she was drawn back to art and started painting full time. Sasha currently lives in NJ during the academic year and spends her summers on Cape Cod and Maine.
